#SaveTheGame: NBA 2K17 Revival Shutdown Sparked 2K27's Loudest Protest — Full Timeline

Fan-run NBA 2K17 Revival PC servers were paused after reported Take-Two action; #SaveTheGame channels VC grind, anti-cheat, and preservation complaints. No official 2K statement on Revival — timeline, creator claims, and counterpoints (updated Oct 16, 2026).

Original 2K HQ graphic summarizing the #SaveTheGame protest and NBA 2K17 Revival timeline

Editor’s note: This is a developing story. Last updated: October 16, 2026 (ET). We are tracking the fan-led #SaveTheGame movement, the short-lived NBA 2K17 “Revival” PC online project, and how creator coverage ties those events to broader NBA 2K27 complaints. @NBA2K confirmed Update 2.0 is LIVE on Oct 8, 2026, and on Oct 15 posted 2K17 vibes / Sunset Beach Season 2 marketing — without naming Revival or #SaveTheGame (timeline 27). 2K and Take-Two still have issued no official statement on Revival, revivalclient.net, or #SaveTheGame by name — only the enforcement, patch, and documented social actions listed in Official 2K actions below. We do not claim 2K intended the Oct 15 post as a response to the protest; any link is fan interpretation. Post-launch, Revival is claiming credit for the patch size (unverified; patch text does not mention the hashtag), while Choc argues the notes skip the community’s core complaints — see timeline entries 17–22 and 24. Some #SaveTheGame replies reject nostalgia marketing as a substitute for economy or gameplay fixes (entry 27).

This article is editorial coverage, not a 2K press release. 2khq.com is unofficial and not affiliated with 2K, Take-Two Interactive, Visual Concepts, the NBA, or the WNBA — and is distinct from 2K’s official NBA 2K HQ companion app. We do not link to Revival installers, preserve.st, or setup guides; we cite public notices and creator journalism only.

What sparked #SaveTheGame

In late September 2026, a wave of YouTube and social posts celebrated a fan-operated effort to bring NBA 2K17 PC online play back through a project widely called “Revival.” Within days, creators reported copyright claims, strikes, and takedowns across YouTube, TikTok, and X — and Revival operators said they were pausing online services and downloads. The @revivalclient X account (bio: “#SaveTheGame / Not affiliated or partnered with NBA 2K / 2KSports”, created July 28, 2025, ~5.7K followers at check) became one hub for the hashtag; creator Choc (@Choc2K on YouTube, ~280K subs; ~49.7K X followers as cited in community coverage) framed a wider rally.

Choc told viewers the goal is literal: “The goal here is to save the game, so the hashtag is quite literally that.” Posts carrying #SaveTheGame shown in creator videos tie the Revival moment to recurring 2K27 grievances: VC and season-pass pricing, grind and mode balance, anti-cheat enforcement speed vs. cheat tutorials, annual “rental” economics, and fear of speaking out after strikes.

The through-line is not “bring back 2K17 only.” Creators argue Take-Two moved fast against a nostalgia server while 2K27 players still debate whether September 24 Protecting Fair Play bans and ongoing cheat markets are equally visible — a contrast Igimo summarized in quoted coverage as 2K acting on the fan project in ~three days (creator claim; 2K has not confirmed a timeline or target).

As of October 16, 2026, the Revival site revivalclient.net still displays only a notice: “Download & Services currently unavailable due to restrictions placed upon Revival on behalf of Take-Two.” (Quoted from the live site text; not a download link; no new news posts on the hub after the Oct 7 input-delay article.)

Official 2K actions (documented only)

Separate #SaveTheGame from what 2K has officially shipped for NBA 2K27 in September 2026:

Date Official action Notes
Sep 11, 2026 Patch 1.5 Crew Divisions quit-loss fix, MyCAREER blockers, stability — no on-court balance in that patch. Dev messaging pointed to a broader pre–Season 2 patch.
Sep 17, 2026 Gameplay Updates Server-side tune: contests, dunks, steals, game speed — requires Main Menu refresh. Listed on nba.2k.com/2k27/patch-updates.
Sep 24, 2026 Protecting Fair Play Steam integrity post: first wave of permanent account bans for cheats/scripts (shooting aids, input manipulation), retroactive to Early Access Aug 26, 2026.
Oct 8, 2026 Patch Notes v2.0 Full pre–Season 2 changelog on Steam; gameplay lines include ghost contest fix, steal rating / adrenaline penalties, and rebound bounce cleanup. @NBA2K posted “Update 2.0 is LIVE” (Oct 8, 2026) citing improvements across gameplay, MyCAREER Eras, and Crew HQ — without naming platforms beyond that post. No mention of Revival or #SaveTheGame in official patch or social copy.
Oct 15, 2026 @NBA2K — “2K17 vibes” / Sunset Beach Season 2 tease (4:00 PM ET) Official marketing copy: “2K17 vibes are BACK 🔥 Sunset Beach returns tomorrow! 🏖️” — invokes NBA 2K17 nostalgia ahead of Season 2 content. Does not mention Revival, revivalclient, or #SaveTheGame. Full Courtside rollout is covered in our Season 2 Courtside report, not duplicated here.

Not official: Any 2K or Take-Two press release, blog post, or social statement naming Revival, revivalclient, or #SaveTheGame. Community theories linking Fair Play timing to Revival announcements remain unverified — including Choc’s claim that bans landed “the next day” after Revival’s announcement (we have not found a primary source tying the two).

Creator claims (attributed)

The following are community and creator allegations, not 2K statements.

Economy, season pass, and “back to its roots” — Choc

Choc alleges MyPLAYER creation costs roughly 4× the VC versus earlier in the year, clothing roughly 25×, and that players need about $80 every six weeks on the season pass to reach level 40. He contrasts cheat tutorials staying visible while 2K17 Revival videos were struck, argues too few patches have landed for a live service game, and calls for 2K to go “back to its roots” (his words in rally coverage). Posts shown in creator videos amplified #SaveTheGame after Revival paused.

Online integrity and VC grind — HankDaTank

HankDaTank points to Zen/Cronus script Discords, broken steals, and Wacky Wednesday clothing priced 10,000–25,000 VC versus ~600 VC at Swags in his comparison — plus ~400,000 VC (over $100 in his framing) to hit 99 OVR. His October 1 video closed with “Save the game, please” while declaring “NBA 2K17 is OVER” for Revival.

Gameplay friction list — via AllCity coverage

AllCity reporting (summarized in his Sep 30–Oct 1 videos) catalogs community grind complaints: ghost contests, steals without adrenaline, rebounding, limitless range, fumbles, jumpshot speed variance, and skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) dissatisfaction. These mirror pre-Revival Boycott2K27 threads; they are player sentiment, not patch notes.

Preservation and “renting 2K” — JackedBill

JackedBill argues players are “renting 2K”: servers close after ~two years, VC does not carry over, and annual buy-in resets progress — using Revival’s shutdown as a case study in IP enforcement vs. preservation. He also reports Revival sold a paid “Revival Plus” tier (see counterpoints).

Revival speed vs. anti-cheat — Igimo (quoted)

Quoted in creator coverage, Igimo claims Take-Two/2K action on the fan project arrived in about three days — a rhetorical contrast to how long exploit videos stay online. 2K has not confirmed any enforcement window for Revival.

Counterpoints and open questions

Balanced read requires friction on both sides:

  • JackedBill reports Revival operated a paid “Revival Plus” tier — community speculation treats monetization of legacy online access as a likely enforcement trigger (Take-Two has not said so publicly).
  • AllCity stresses there is no public evidence that 2K targeted Revival specifically or that Mike Wang (Beluba) directed takedowns; he urges separating corporate IP teams from gameplay staff.
  • Jai Eazy declined to install Revival, citing security concerns — a reminder that unofficial clients carry risk independent of IP law.
  • Several creators note many 2K17 Revival migrants were players already banned by September 24 Fair Play — complicating the “refugee” narrative (community claim; 2K does not break down ban reasons publicly).

Mike Wang / Beluba: Per AllCity, Wang replied he would keep reading X for feedback but would not tweet much. His X account was deactivated the night of September 30, briefly reactivated the morning of October 1 with a smiley avatar (King Jordan, OG Almighty, AllCity coverage), then deactivated again the night of October 2 per community reports (DoubleH_YT, @2KIntel screenshot of “Posts aren’t loading right now” for @Beluba). As of October 16, 2026, an X lookup for username Beluba still returns “Could not find user” / account unavailable — we are not stating a reason (no confirmed firing, protest, or third-party narrative as fact). 2K has issued no statement about his absence. Players continue to ask where he is in low-weight posts (e.g. PelkDog, Oct 13; _TeezyX, Oct 14 — #SaveTheGame #WhereTFisMikeWang). A viral “Mike Wang released/fired” Visual Concepts statement was debunked as a hoax by Hindustan Times and Times Now World. Do not treat unsourced termination graphics as official.

  • NLSC Podcast #650 (Oct 6, 2026): A host speculated that #SaveTheGame was being blocked in chat on what looked like an official 2K Twitch stream, but explicitly hedged (“don’t quote me on that”). Unverified — we have not confirmed any Twitch filter policy or 2K stream moderation change; treat as podcast hearsay only (timeline entry 14).

  13. Oct 2, 1:14 AM — SwantE reports a Revival teaser hinting “Golden Era” 2Ks returning; an unnamed “OG 2K producer” shared design principles “easy to play, hard to master, fun first, realism second” in his video. revivalclient.net still shows the Take-Two restriction notice.

  14. Oct 6, 11:38 AM — Press: NBA Live publishes NLSC Podcast #650: NBA 2K27 & The Save The Game Movement (~60 min; Oct 6, 11:38 AM ET from site date_gmt metadata). Show notes recap community efforts to revive NBA 2K15/2K16/2K17 online via fan servers, a DMCA takedown snag, and interest in older titles amid 2K27 dissatisfaction; hosts react to revival projects and #SaveTheGame. In the episode, a host says the hashtag is used two ways — pressure to fix the current franchise vs. preserving older titles — and speculates (with an explicit “don’t quote me on that”) that #SaveTheGame may have been blocked in chat on what looked like an official 2K Twitch stream. Unverified podcast claim on Twitch moderation; not confirmed by 2K or Twitch.

  15. Oct 7, 2026 — Revival (attributed): Revival’s news hub posts Let’s talk about 2K: why online has input delay by $jay, arguing every NBA 2K since at least 2K14 runs online on lockstep netcode with about 100 ms of designed input delay, why one laggy player can stall the court, and why shrinking that budget is not a simple fix. These are Revival’s technical claims, not independently verified here; the site banner still quotes Take-Two restrictions on downloads and services.

  16. Oct 8, 2:00 AM — Evan (@itsEvanCC) posts the official Patch Notes v2.0 graphic on X (post), summarizing shooting, passing, defense, steals, dribbling, 25-year MyCAREER Eras careers, and Crew Divisions REP/CXP changes. ~2:40 AM — full changelog lands on Steam. Documented gameplay fixes include ghost contests, steal animations tied to rating with out-of-adrenaline penalties, and missed-shot rebound bounce cleanup — items that appear on creator complaint lists summarized in AllCity coverage above. 2K still has not addressed Revival or #SaveTheGame by name. See our Patch Notes v2.0 summary.

  17. Oct 8, 2:44 AM — Choc (@choc) replies in the v2.0 notes thread: “21 pages of patch notes but nothing on ANY of the actual issues with the game. Quite insane.” (post) — a counterpoint to players treating the changelog as a full #SaveTheGame answer.

  18. Oct 8, 6:37 AM — @revivalclient posts: “21 PAGES. Let’s not act like #SaveTheGame doesn’t get us what we want. The power of our words in realtime.” (post). Unverified claim: Revival is attributing the patch to protest pressure; official patch notes and @NBA2K copy do not mention Revival or #SaveTheGame (contrast with Choc in entry 17).

  19. Oct 8, 1:30 PM — OFFICIAL: @NBA2K announces “Update 2.0 is LIVE” (post) with “New improvements and fixes across Gameplay, MyCAREER Eras, Crew HQ, and more.” 2:32 PM — follow-up thank-you thread citing record MyPLAYER builds created and MyCAREER Eras team picks (post); still no Revival or #SaveTheGame mention.

  20. Oct 8, 4:47 PM — @revivalclient reply (community operator, not 2K): “We’ve thought about Madden, WWE, and some other ‘underground’ type games.” (post) — brief signal the account is weighing other legacy titles; no change to the Take-Two restriction notice on revivalclient.net.

  21. Oct 8, 5:07 PM — Choc posts “We have to have a serious talk #SaveTheGame” with attached video (X post); follow-up replies on X frame the clip as a cheating discussion (creator claim). We could not verify a matching @Choc2K YouTube upload from this environment; cite the X thread only.

  22. Oct 8–9, 2026 — Mixed post-patch sentiment on #SaveTheGame / v2.0: some players praise specific fixes (e.g. @giocki: “HAND DOWN MAN DOWN IS BACK THANK YOU @beluba” — post), while others say the update did not “save” the game (e.g. @T_NugsTTV: “2k was definitely NOT saved in this patch” — post). Low-weight player posts, not official 2K messaging.

  23. Oct 2, ~10:05–11:36 PM — Community accounts report Beluba deactivated X again. DoubleH_YT (10:05 PM); @2KIntel (11:36 PM, screenshot showing @Beluba “Posts aren’t loading right now”). As of Oct 16, 2026, the Beluba username still does not resolve on X (“Could not find user”). 2K has not commented. (Low-weight speculation only: RealJustBill — not verified.)

  24. Oct 12–13, 2026 — Choc post-patch verdict (creator take; continues entry 17, not an official development): Oct 12, 9:04 PM — X post: “Loaded up my first game of 2K after patch 2 and needless to say this company does nothing right…” Oct 13, 9:00 PM — YouTube Patch 2 in NBA 2K27 is… (~23.5K views at check); coverage describes him framing the game harshly (e.g. “Frown Simulator” in commentary). Ties to the watch item on whether v2.0 changes the #SaveTheGame protest narrative — aligned with his Oct 8 criticism, not a reversal.

  25. Oct 15, 10:19 AM — AllCity YouTube NBA 2K27 SERVER DELAY EXPLAINED! We May FINALLY Know Why! cites independent research that 2K uses lockstep netcode with ~100 ms input buffer; he says not confirmed by 2K. Echoes Revival’s Oct 7 lockstep/input-delay blog (entry 15); he does not name Revival or #SaveTheGame in the video — not new Revival research.

  26. Oct 15, 1:25 PM — Unverified fan client claim: @Back2Back2k (~116 followers at check) posts “BACK2BACK17 PARK IS OPEN!” and describes its own NBA 2K17 client as “about SKILL, not the grind” with all HOF badges granted. Not Revival as far as we can tell; no 2K or Take-Two response cited. Same IP / enforcement risk context as Revival (Take-Two has not commented on this account). We cite the X post only — no Discord, installer, mirror, or join instructions.

  27. Oct 15, 4:00 PM — OFFICIAL: @NBA2K posts “2K17 vibes are BACK 🔥 Sunset Beach returns tomorrow! 🏖️” (post) — documented Season 2 marketing that explicitly invokes NBA 2K17 nostalgia roughly two weeks after Take-Two’s restriction notice on the fan-run Revival project. Does not mention Revival, revivalclient, or #SaveTheGame; 2K has still issued no statement on either. Fan interpretation only if players read this as a protest response — we are not asserting 2K intent. #SaveTheGame pushback (low-weight player posts, not creators or 2K): 5:26 PM — yoFamlyy: “Bringing back the courts is not saving the game. #SaveTheGame”; 9:56 PM — kryy_x lists $80 game / $100 build / $100 season pass / $100 GOAT Build costs and calls it pay-to-win under #SaveTheGame; Oct 16, 12:38 AM — swaggfaceceo: “I dont think anybody cares about a off brand 17 ‘vibe’ mind yall its still 2k27 😂 #doomed #savethegame”. Courtside details: Season 2 Courtside report.

  28. Oct 16, 2026 (status check) — revivalclient.net still shows only the Take-Two restriction notice (quoted above). No new posts from @revivalclient or @choc since the Oct 15 morning window we tracked. Beluba username still unavailable on X. No press coverage or official 2K/Take-Two statement on Revival or #SaveTheGame found in our Oct 16 check.

Why creators say Fair Play and Revival feel connected

September 24 Protecting Fair Play is official policy: permanent bans for shooting aids and input manipulation since Early Access. #SaveTheGame posts shown in creator videos ask why IP enforcement against a 2016 title moved on a creator-news cycle while script Discords and cheat tutorials remain discoverable — a fairness-of-enforcement argument, not a denial that cheats exist.

2K’s graphic promises more waves and improving detection. Creators want that same urgency on VC pricing, season pass cadence, and gameplay patches — the September 17 tune and Patch 1.5 stability work did not settle those debates. Patch Notes v2.0 went live per @NBA2K on Oct 8, 2026 as the documented pre–Season 2 balance pass for ghost contests, steals, and boards, but it does not publish VC or season-pass changes — a gap Choc highlighted hours after the Steam changelog dropped (timeline 17).

What we’re watching

  • Official 2K or Take-Two response to Revival or #SaveTheGame by name (none as of Oct 16, 2026), despite Update 2.0 (@NBA2K) and Oct 15 “2K17 vibes” / Sunset Beach marketing (@NBA2K; entry 27).
  • Whether 2K’s 2K17-nostalgia Season 2 marketing changes or inflames the #SaveTheGame narrative — nostalgia courts vs. VC, season pass, and grind complaints (player pushback in entry 27; not claiming 2K meant to answer the protest).
  • Other fan-run 2K17 clients — unverified claims such as Back2Back2k (entry 26) under the same Take-Two IP enforcement backdrop as Revival, without promoting access.
  • Beluba / Mike Wang on X — account still unavailable as of Oct 16, 2026 (entries 23, 28); no 2K statement on his absence.
  • Whether v2.0 gameplay fixes change the protest narrative — Revival credit claims (unverified; entry 18) vs. Choc arguing the notes miss core issues (entries 17, 21, 24) and mixed player reactions (entry 22).
  • Unconfirmed Twitch chat moderation — NLSC hosts’ hedged claim that #SaveTheGame was blocked on an official-looking 2K Twitch stream (entry 14; not verified).
  • Console parity for Update 2.0 if 2K posts platform-specific rollout beyond the Oct 8 social announcement.
  • Further anti-cheat waves beyond the September 24 first wave (Fair Play coverage).
  • Creator platform disputes — whether strikes ease or expand, and whether large channels keep covering legacy projects without install guides.
  • revivalclient.net — still the Take-Two restriction notice as of Oct 16, 2026 (entry 28); no new hub posts after the Oct 7 input-delay piece (entry 15). Licensed legacy access remains speculation.
  • Season 2 / Courtside — tracked in our dedicated Season 2 Courtside report; this timeline only notes overlap with #SaveTheGame (e.g. entry 27), not full Courtside promo.
